Arizona Cardinals week 6 Bonehead Award

USA TODAY Sports

Which player took home the Bonehead Award for their week 6 'D'oh" moment?

Week six of the 2013 NFL season found the Arizona Cardinals travelling to Candlestick Park to take on the hosting San Francisco 49ers, with both teams sporting a 3-2 record prior to kickoff. It had been said prior to the game that for Arizona to have a chance at winning the game, the Cards would need to protect the football and not make mistakes.

After sixty minutes of play those truths became evident as the Cardinals failed to protect the ball and made a few mental mistakes, resulting in a final score of 32-20 in favor of San Francisco.

Who are the week six nominees for the Bonehead Award based upon their play? I've pulled a few names from the group, they're listed below.

First up in the running is a name not seen here often, that of star WR Larry Fitzgerald. Late in the 3rd quarter with the Cardinals marching down the field, currently on the San Francisco 31 yard line. Carson Palmer finds Fitzgerald for 1 gain of 8 yards, but as Fitz struggles for yardage, Patrick Willis strips the ball. The 49ers recover and march the ball down the field to score.

Another nominee also put the ball on the ground yesterday in limited touches. RB Alfonso Smith gutted out a touch two yards but lost the ball when rookie Cory Lemonier pushed it out. A few plays later the 49ers capitalized with a field goal.

Two new faces have been added to the Bonehead Award nominee pool, but it would be awful lonely without mentioning the man that seems poised to have the Bonehead Award renamed after him. I'm talking about the interception machine, Carson Palmer.

Palmer through five games had thrown 9 interceptions. Would he finally break free from that pattern in game six? Alas, no. Palmer once again takes the Bonehead Award with his play yesterday, managing another two interceptions on the year. Palmers' first interception came as the Cardinals were driving, threatening to see 49ers territory. Palmer looks for TE Jim Dray, instead having the ball snatched from the air by Eric Reed. The 49ers would turn around and score a field goal from the turnover.

Palmers' second interception came as he as targeting Larry Fitzgerald. This time Arizona was backed up deep in their own territory and Carlos Rogers managed to return the ball to the Cards 11 yard line. Again the 49ers would turn the interception into 3 points.

How about it, who do you think takes home the Bonehead Award for week 6 with the game-day play?
