Will the Arizona Cardinals use their franchise tag this year? CBS Sports thinks not

Stephen Dunn

We see if there are any potential candidates for the franchise tag on the Arizona Cardinals roster.

Last year, the Arizona Cardinals used their franchise tag, but only for a limited time. They slapped it on Calais Campbell before agreeing to a brand new 5-year, $55 million deal with the hulking defensive end. With the new deal, the franchise tag was essentially erased.

So who could the Cardinals use it on this year, if need be? Their list of free agents includes names like Greg Toler, LaRod Stephens-Howling, Quentin Groves, Rashad Johnson, Paris Lenon and others. But are any of them worth the big money they would receive from a franchise tag?

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora doesn't think so. He says that there are, "no obvious candidates for the Cardinals." And I tend to agree with him.

All of the aforementioned players (along with some others that didn't even bear mentioning) can be re-signed for significantly less than the franchise tag would afford them. Using the tag would be a big hit against the Cardinals' cap, which they already need to cut away from given that they are $3 million over the limit.

The tag simply isn't feasible this season. And that's a good thing. It means the Cardinals don't have any big-time star players that they need to get signed. Sure, some of these guys are starters, but they can be replaced.

What do you make of this? Do the Cardinals need to franchise tag anyone? Tell us in the comments section below.
