Sunday is the Oscars, the "kiss my ring" event for Hollywood that salutes the best of the best for 2012 film making and while I'm pretty sure I won't be watching it, wouldn't it be grand to have an awards blog for the best of the best Arizona Cardinals 2012?
Well, they finished 5-11, losing 11 of last 12 so it ain't going to happen.
Maybe, next season.
That being said, I CAN do a cumulative little-red-robin-like-bird trophy for Phoenix/Arizona Cardinal players that I feel deserve the "Azbird".
So without further ado, I present the Azbird to:
Best Newcomer: Anquan Boldin. Breaks rookie record with 217 yards vs. the Lions. IMO, was the guy that jump-started changing the Cards culture.
Best Newcomer Before Going To Prison For Dog Fighting: LeShon Johnson 214 yards against the Saints in 1996. First 2 TDs of career. Unfortunately, that was as good as it got.
Best Cinematography: Larry Centers leaping over would be-tackler Larry Brown of the Cowboys on Monday Night Football. I can just hear NFL Film's John Facenda with the voiceover in my mind.
Best Dramatic With A Twist Ending: Neil Lomax's 9 yard TD to Roy Green with seconds left over the Joe Montana/ Jerry Rice led 49ers in 1988. Niners had a 23-7 lead before losing 24-23. I included it as dramatic/heartbreaking because Lomax injured his hip the following week vs. the Giants and never won another game.
Best Supporting Players: Micheal Adams (did he facemask?) getting all up in Aaron Rodgers grill and forcing the fumble that Karlos Dansby turned into a touchdown in the 2010 51-45 Cards playoff win. With Kurt Warner's near perfect game, he could be included in the category.
Best Individual Performance: Larry Fitzgerald's 2008 postseason- 30 catches for 546 yards and 7 touchdowns. Even with Boldin's uber 2012 playoff run, he would have to had something like 13/210/3 in the Super Bowl to match Fitzs'.
Best Ending: Jake Plummer's 36 yd heave-ho to Martay Jenkins with 9 seconds left to stun the Eagles in Philly circa 2001, 21-20. To see Dave McGuiness jumping for joy (You can catch it on YouTube) makes my day everytime.
Best Ending Runner-up: Same Plummer/Chris Jacke/ Kwame Lassiter winning the last regular season game and making the 1998 playoffs (first time for Cards in 22 years) and defeating the Cowboys in Dallas. Didn't advance, but 'nuff said.
Best Comedic Actor: With apologies to Dennis Green, the award goes to Derek Anderson, who during a MNF Cardinal crushing was seen yukking it up with Duece Lutui on the sidelines. (Guess is Derek was laughing about Duece's claim to being a vegetarian.) But during postgame interviews, Anderson made it clear that he's not funny.
And the 2013 cumulative Phoenix/Arizona Cardinal AZbird that doesn't include Beanie Well 228 yd game/Patrick Peterson 4 TD punt return season/Jay Feely 20 something point game/Boomer Esiason 522 passing yard game is....(drumroll please)....
Fitzgerald's 64 yard TD in the 2009 Super Bowl that gave AZ a brief lead in hopes of winning it's first modern championship. (And I still say Santonio Holmes did not have both feet down.) Larry was basically shut down for the first three quarters with only one catch for 12 yards, but lit it up in the fourth including the slant that just blew the doors off- at least in my household. It was like "Rosebud, I don't give a damn if you phone home, ET, just show me the money" all rolled into one. It was that classic.
And that's my opinion on the Azbird. Just be thankful you didn't see my sing and dance pre-show.
