Painting the Cardinals Salary Cap Picture

The Cardinals are reportedly $750K over the salary cap for 2013. With FA fast approaching, the combine over and the draft board set; they should have a pretty good idea of what they need to do in free agency at this point.

With regard to moves they can make to free up cap space; they are limited when it comes to the interior of the offensive line. Snyder, Sendeline and College carry too high of a cap burden to be cut ( dead money ). The likeley scenerio is they are stuck with these guys and try to coach them up. That's the bad news. The good news is that the Cardinals salary cap issues aren't nearly as bad as one might think.

I have used the numbers from www.sportrac.com/nfl/arizona-cardinals/cap-hit/ to formulate a free agencey plan for the Cards. A plan that get's rid of dead weight, extends Rhodes, re-signs our home grown talent, attempts to re-structure serviceble players down to thier dead money number or cut them and allows us to sign our incoming rookies as well as fill needs at RB and SILB.

Without further ado, here is my free agency cap plan for the Cardinals:

Priority Position 2013 Cap Savings Actions

($-750,000.00) Starting Cap Space

*Numbers below are what the Cardinals save in cap space:

1 QB $6,500,000.00 Restructure or Cut Kolb

2 SS $3,000,000.00 Restructure or Cut A-Dub

*Out of all of the moves, the Adub move is the one that tears at the heart strings. I hope hes willing to re-structure and ride this thing to the pinnacle once again.

3 CB $3,000,000.00 Cut Gay

4 WILB $3,500,000.00 Cut Stewart Bradley

5 WR $1,700,000.00 Cut Doucet

6 QB $500,000.00 Cut lindley

7 QB $600,000.00 Cut Skelton

8 RB $1,500,000.00 Cut Wells

Salary cap increase $2,400,000.00

$22,700,000.00 New Cap Space

*Numbers below are what the Cardinals add to their Cap:

1 SS ($3,000,000.00) Re-Sign Rashad Johnson

2 CB ($3,000,000.00) Re-Sign Greg Toler

3a. QB ($1,300,000.00) Sign Stanton

3b. QB ($1,300,000.00) Sign Hoyer

4. ALL ($6,000,000.00) Sign Rookies

5 SILB ($2,500,000.00) Sign SILB (ex:Malaluga,Grant)

6 RB ($2,500,000.00) Sign RB (ex:Mendenhall,Bradshaw)

6 RB ($2,500,000.00) Sign Groves

$600,000.00 Cap Space after signings

Important Note: Fitz really holds the purse strings on this team and could and should help the Cards in alleviating more cap space by re-structuring; Tom Brady style.
