Smart, Fast, Physical Football
There are a few things we have learned with our new coaching staff that really stand out. Many of which us Cardinals fans want from our coaching staff. Many of which previous coaching staffs have not able to.
First and foremost, BA has preached over and over that they intend to above all else, coach this team to be smart, fast and physical. This shows a great understanding of what it takes to win in the NFL and what it will take to win in the new black and blue division; the NFC West. We will be competing with teams that have already displayed this type of football. I do believe we have the players on both sides of the ball to be smart and physical. On defense we have the players to be fast but I think we are missing this element of talent on the offensive side of the ball. We really need someone who can take the top off the defense and/or can be a real threat to break one in the screen game, someone who can get that chunk yardage.
Secondly, the message is clear that the coaching staff will place a high importance on 3rd down and red zone efficiency. This is a very important component to winning games so I am ecstatic that the coaching staff is determined to address 3rd down and Red Zone with an acute focus. We know 1st hand what happens when you cant pick up 3rd downs and cant score touch downs. Its just as important on the other side of the ball to stop the other team on 3rd downs and in the Red Zone. I think that we have the players on the defensive side of the ball to make this happen. On the offensive side of the ball we need to generate more running yards on 1st down and 3rd down. We also need to find a good red zone target outside of Larry. Maybe Michael can be that guy.
Third, the coaching staff has made it known that they will tailor their system to the players strengths. This may be one of the biggest keys to the coaching staffs success. We have a lot of un-tapped talent on both sides of the ball. If this staff can get these players playing to their fullest potential by establishing a system and plays that maximize the players strengths, we will see what we have been saying all along; this team has championship caliber talent.
Last but not least, the coaching staff has acknowledged on several occasions that everything starts with winning the line of scrimmage. The Cardinals failures in this area, especially on the offensive side of the ball, may or may not have been due to talent. I personally do not think it is entirely a talent issue. i think it was more due to coaching and play calling. However, I do acknowledge that we need to continue to increase the talent level and depth on the line of scrimmage. I expect that the cardinals coaches will make the right additions, subtractions and moves on the offensive line and defensive line based on their acknowledgement of its importance.
Regardless of what the Cardinals do in the draft or free agency I believe in the plans that this coaching staff has established. I believe that they have the coaching experience to execute these plans. I believe that we have the talent to execute these plans and that we are only one good draft and consistent QB play away. I am looking forward to seeing how the Cardinals address their needs in the draft and FA as they perceive them and most of all; I am looking forward to watching and supporting a smart, fast and physical football team. Please comment on what you have seen that you liked or disliked with this new coaching staff. Comment on what you believe the team is missing to attain the objectives laid forth by the staff.
Lets go win the offseason and then let's go win the division !!
