Arizona Cardinals announce release Adrian Wilson

Christian Petersen

The team is saying goodbye to one of the best players ever to grace a Cardinals uniform.

This offseason continues to be one of change for the Arizona Cardinals. According to XTRA 910's Mike Jurecki, the team is going to release veteran safety Adrian Wilson. Wilson was drafted by the Cardinals and played for the team 12 seasons. He intends to continue his career in the NFL.

Wilson was due a $1 million roster bonus on Tuesday. The move will save the team $3.75 million in actual salary and they gain another $3 million in salary cap space.

Wilson, a five-time Pro Bowler, played in more games for Arizona than any other player in team history. In his career, he has joined an elite few to collect at least 25 sacks and interceptions. He has 25.5 sacks in his career and 27 interceptions.

A player who rarely came off the field, he saw his playing time decrease last season when defensive coordinator Ray Horton removed him from nickel packages.

The move, while sad for fans, is hardly surprising.

Arizona now only has Kerry Rhodes and Justin Bethel (a cornerback in college) who can play safety on the roster. Rashad Johnson and James Sanders are both free agents, although the team has had talks with Johnson to return. This will certainly be a position that the team will address in free agency and/or the draft.
