Larry Fitzgerald is still in the NFL, but he is getting his number retired. Well, it isn't in the NFL, but rather his college number. Fitz will have his his jersey number retired (No. 1) at the University of Pittsburgh. He will be the ninth player to have his number retired by the school, joining Mike Ditka, Tony Dorsett, Bill Fralic, Marshall Goldberg, Hugh Green, Dan Marino, Mark May and Joe Schmidt.
Those are some impressive names. Not that Fitz isn't equally impressive.
While he is still playing for the Cardinals, it got me thinking -- he has meant so much to the franchise -- how long after Fitz retiired will it take for him to added to the Cardinals Ring of Honor?
In baseball, back in the early 90s, Harold Baines left the Chicago White Sox, joining the Baltimore Orioles. The White Sox retired Baines' number while he was still playing in the league. Do you think that is something even remotely possible with the Cards? What of Fitz finished his career elsewhere? do you think he would come back for an honorary Cards contract before he retires?
