This offseason, one of the main themes we have seen for the Arizona Cardinals has been to sign veteran free agent players to one-year deals. Rashard Mendenhall, Antoine Cason, Karlos Dansby, Eric Winstonn, Yeremiah Bell and and many lesser known players are in that group.
Each player is in a "prove it" situation that is great for the Cardinals for now, but potentially could leave them in a position where they lose players next offseason.
However, if these players perform well, general manager Steve Keim is not just going to let them leave. According to what he told reporter Darren Urban, he will "actively approach" players for contract extensions if they fit into longer term plans.
With the number of players like that, it also sets up the team to be in a position where, if they leave, Arizona will pick up compensatory draft picks. If these players don't work out, the team is not bound to them.
While this movement of short contracts in free agency can be attributed to the sudden drop in value for veteran players, it is certain that Steve Keim is dong his best to avoid crippling the roster with bad free agent deals.
