2013 Arizona Cardinals draft rerun: Dan Williams

Dan Williams at Fan Fest - USA TODAY Sports

A further episode of what we think we knew then and what we think we know now of current Arizona Cardinals players.

Back during the Ken Whisenhunt era, (which probably seems as far back as the last time the franchise had won a championship, 1947) the coaching staff and front office was annually looking for a nose tackle to secure the front defensive line.

Gabe Watson had bad knees.

Alan Branch had problems finding a light switch.

And Bryan Robinson had bad knees and couldn't reach the light switch without climbing onto his dentures.

Just like Matt Leinart and "Beanie" Wells, Dan Williams "fell" to the team with the 26th pick in the 2010 first round.

A former defensive tackle at Tennessee, he was moved to a more natural position of noseguard by Lane Kiffin in 2009. He responded with 2.5 sacks, 9 tackles for loss and 9 quarterback pressures. He became a stereotypical NT candidate and his draft prospects skyrocketed.

He seemed the missing mountain piece the Cards needed but how has it panned out?

What We Knew Then

CBSsports loved Williams' strength and swim techniques when rushing.

NFL.com sided with his "nasty" attitude (?) and ability to draw double teams from the offense.

FFToolbox was of the opinion that his experience and being an inside clogger provides opportunities for other players.

What We Know Now

Almost every college draft profile came with two deterrent examples of what could possibly "weigh" Williams down -- poundage control and work ethic.

He's started 40 out of a possible 48 NFL games missing 6 in 2011 with a broken arm, averaging about 25 tackles a year.

He's clearly a first down run stopper, but was/ is he worth a first round pick? Plenty of competition with David Carter, Ricky Lumpkin and Padric Scott at a position where it might be hard to keep two players? Can he keep the weight off and still stay motivated?

The only consolation if not, may be the player directly drafted in the slot in front of him: Tim Tebow.
