Cardinals vs. Chargers: The key stats

Christian Petersen

A look at the stat sheet to see what happened on Saturday in the ugly loss.

The eye test told you the Arizona Cardinals did very poorly in their 24-7 preseason loss to the San Diego Chargers. You have to imagine that the stat sheet said the same thing. Here are some stats to tell you the good and the bad from the game on Saturday.

8.2 -- The average yards per carry by the running backs behind the first team offensive line. Rashard Mendenhall carried the ball six times for 47 yards and Alfonso Smith did so five times for 44 yards.

82.2 -- Carson Palmer's passer rating for the game. The touchdown pass helped a lot.

25% -- The offense's third conversion success. They were 3/12. Terrible, as in 2012 terrible.

53% -- The third down conversion rate for the Chargers. Not good. The defense was unable to get off the field. That will have to change for the team to have any success in 2013, especially if the offense is going to struggle to get first downs.

11-94 -- The number of penalties and yards assessed to the Cardinals. Yes, not every flag on Jerraud Powers was blatant, but you can't have that many penalties and expect to win games.

203/5.3 -- The total number of passing yards for Arizona and the average yards passing per attempt. Those are embarrassing numbers considering the way Bruce Arians wants his offense to play.

1 -- The number of tackles for a loss. Based on what we have heard about the defense and defensive line scheme, this has to increase for the scheme to work.
