Ah, so it has come to this. The sad saga of Kevin Kolb's career may have come to a critical point on Saturday as he suffered his SECOND injury of the preseason. Yet ANOTHER "freak" injury may have ended Kolb's career, as he had his third major concussion in limited play in his second preseason game.
I know many of you think I hate Kolb. This is not true, and I've been watching him play since he was at UofH (where I lived during his college days). I like many others wanted to see Kolb succeed upon graduation. However, after his brief stint in Philly I knew the simply hadn't proven himself to merit what the Cards gave up for him in THE TRADE. It turned out to be a disaster that inevitably resulted in the firing of the majority of the coaching staff and the GM. From my memory, this was the worst trade in the history of the team. Kolb did not have the mental or physical tools necessary for the complex offenses of the NFL. He did not read defenses well or get rid of the ball quickly enough (causing him to rely on scrambling to buy time) and his body was just too weak to sustain blows from those rather large NFL defensive players (and sometimes wet mats).
Buffalo knew Kolb was a risk and stop-gap at best, so they took EJ Emanuel in the first round to be their future QB. However, from all indications, EJ had effectively won the QB competition in training camp as Kolb struggled mightily, just as he did last preseason. Kolb's only claim to the starter's job was EJ's injury in the second preseason game.
So who will Buffalo rely on without their veteran? Their rookie Jeff Tuel had a sold first two preseason games, and a rather weak third against starting units. Of course, they turn to the highest-profile free agent on the market available.... Matt Leinart. Will this be redemption time for Leinart? Or will he continue his career as the backup with his sad face and hands hanging off the collar of his chest pads? We will soon see.
PS- to round out news of last year's starters- John Skelton will likely be cut from Cinci despite having a very good preseason. They will likely only carry 2 QBs on the active roster, and Josh Johnson has been lights out for them. Skelton will likely be picked up off the waiver wire by another team (maybe the Bills?)..... that would be totally rad.
