Cardinals vs. Broncos: 5 Negatives

Doug Pensinger

The fourth and final preseason game is over.

And while it was a win, it wasn't all glory setting up for the upcoming season.

Here are the 5 negatives from the Arizona Cardinals vs. Denver Broncos preseason game.

1) The Run Defense

One particular area that the defense seemed to fall behind in was defending against the run. Throughout the game, the Broncos' RB's powered through the Cardinals' defenders. The defense allowed two TD's from two different RB's, which is something they just can not afford to do in the regular season.

2) Third Down Efficiency

The Cardinals were just 7-14 on 3rd downs. A 50% success rate will not cut it in the games that count. This is the most crucial down, and the team has to figure out how to convert in situations like this. (If it's any consolation, the Broncos were even worse; they went 6-14)

3) Pass Defense

To continue the dissection of the defensive performance, Bronco's QB (And ASU alumni) Brock Osweiler seemed to have the defense tied around his finger. He went 7-11 for 108 yards, and at times looked like he was one step ahead.

4) Finishing the Job

By using this term, I am referring completely to how Osweiler was able to run the ball for as many yards as he did. When chased out of the pocket, he rushed the ball 4 times for 25 yards (With an average of 6.3 yards per rush). After flushing the QB out of the pocket, the Cardinals need to follow the simple motto: Finish the job.

5) Ryan Williams' yardage

Yes, I am aware that Coach Arians said he was impressed with Williams' performance, and yes, I'm aware that at this point I'm grasping for straws. But still, 9 rushes for only 25 yards is definitely not the greatest. However, I will say this: I liked what I saw him from Williams, and I definitely think the team should keep him on.

All in all, the game wasn't half bad. Ryan Lindley ended the night with a QB rating of 99.5. Also, don't forget to take into account that this entire game was played mostly by the 2nd and 3rd string players, and by half way through the 1st quarter, there were essentially no starters on the field.

The real test will come in the following week. Let's hope we have few negatives to report on then.
