The Detroit Lions released safety Louis Delmas on Thursday, a move that saved the team $6 million in salary cap space.
Delmas, a 5-11, 197 pound free safety, had 64 total tackles, two sacks and three interceptions in 2013.
He started all 16 games for the Lions, but struggled with injuries the two seasons prior, playing in a total of 19 games in two seasons.
The Lions have expressed interest in re-signing the five-year veteran at a lower salary, but for now he is free to sign with any team because he was released.
The question is whether the Arizona Cardinals should take a look. With Yeremiah Bell set to become a free agent and Tyrann Mathieu recovering from major knee surgery, the need safety help. Delmas is a free safety, but if he were to join Arizona, Rashad Johnson could slide over to strong safety (he can play both positions). Delmas is a little shorter than the team is reportedly looking for, but he is a solid player.
Pro Football Focus gave him a positive grade overall for the season and in pass coverage, but looking a little deeper, he was graded positively in coverage in 10 of 16 games.
