Offseason part: 2- Free Agency

With free agency fast approaching the cards have "many holes' to fill. I believe that building through the draft is the way to go and FA simply is a way to churn the bottom of the roster (maybe finding a guy who will excel in our scheme) and add the odd impact player (usually at a price). Before looking at who we should go after I am going to talk about who we need to send away.

1. DD- Dockett has been a mainstay in the Cards D since he was drafted, but all good things must come to an end. I have seen his cap number for this coming year listed as low as like 5.45 mil and as high as 8.8 mil. Whether it is the high end or low end of that makes no difference, He either needs to be restructured to what a 33 with 4.5, 1.5, and 3.5 sacks should make, or be released. I know many of you will say how good he is against the run, his leadership, he fits the scheme, etc. We could do so much more with that money, plus if we resign Mr. Rucker, we won't even notice Dockett is gone. Great franchises make business, not emotional, decisions and Dockett needs to go.

2. DC- Mr. Colledge has been overpaid since day 1 and it is time to put an end to that. I know he has lots of dead money if we cut him, but lets do it. We should still add over 2 mil to our cap space. We have finally been drafting some O linemen over the past drafts and now it is time to ride with them. Why overpay a mediocre guard when our line has sucked anyways. Take the 2.2 isn million added to this years cap and the 5 mil in dead so we do not have to deal with it next year and get some young legs on the line.

3. Ryan Williams- I was hoping he would work out, but he cannot stay healthy. A change of scenery would do him, and us well. saves about 1 mil.

4. Stanton- We know that Carson is our guy for the foreseeable future and we cannot waste this kind of money on a backup. Cut him and draft a QB late. saves 3 isn mil.

I do not know how the numbers of this would shake out as different websites have different amounts of dead, guaranteed, or actual salary numbers, but I think we could add another 10 isn million in cap space and eat some of the bad cap decisions the prior regime made that will help next year when Fitz is going to make 38 million (or whatever ridiculous number it is).

This should put us around 20 million in cap space, which is a lot better than 10.

So what should we do with all this cash...Not spend it on a LT. The how many great LT's make FA? None. We need to draft a LT and this draft is loaded with them.

1). Pursue TJ Ward hard!! This guy is a top flight safety who is dying to get out of the B%&$# Prison (dog pound??). Pair him with the Honey Badger, PP, and the corner that many mock drafts have us taking, and all of a sudden we have an amazing secondary. I would way rather pay Ward 8.8 Million a year for the next 4 years instead DD. Maybe a 4 year 35 million dollar contract, 15 guaranteed?

2). Paul Soliai- He is a monster at stopping the run and would replace DD.

3). Ben Tate- I am interested in MJD, but would prefer a RB who is just getting started as opposed to one on the downside.

4). Darius Heyward-Bey: He is still young and can take the top off a D. We are not looking for him to catch 70 balls, just 4-5, as long as they go for long TD's. Should be cheap too.

5). Kevin Boothe- To replace Colledge- Boothe is a load that also has some experience as a Center

6). Walter Thurmond- Weakens that Seahawks and brings us knowledge of what they do defensively. Also, brings needed secondary depth.

7). Arthur Jones- A solid 3-4 end who is on the right side of 30.

As you can see I would like to break the bank on Ward, and then pick up some solid role players who could develop into more. Thoughts?
