The Arizona Cardinals have been just active enough in free agency so far. They have not been breaking the bank. They have, though, been doing exactly what they set out to do.
To start the offseason, Arizona wanted to do a few things. One was address the left tackle position. They have done that by signing Jared Veldheer to a five year contract.
They wanted to add physicality and depth to the offensive line. They have done that with two moves. First, they signed Veldheer, and then they signed Ted Larsen, a player with starting experience who can play both guard and center. Left tackle is secured and there is good competition for the starting jobs at right guard and right tackle.
With a lot of youth at running back, they needed a veteran. They added Jonathan Dwyer, who has experience and some success in the league. He creates nice competition for playing time between himself, Stepfan Taylor and Ryan Williams behind Andre Ellington.
The team wanted to get more physical on the defensive line and add depth. So far, they brought back Frostee Rucker. They re-signed Matt Shaugnessy, who plays outside linebacker, but is very important up front against the run.
The brought back Marcus Benard, who showed some pass rushing ability. He will provide depth at the position and competition.
They brought back specialists Dave Zastudil and Jay Feely. At kicker, they put Feely in a position to have to compete, as he will battle young, strong-legged Danny Hrapmann.
What haven't they done?
They have not addressed the defensive backfield. They need to add depth at cornerback and they need to address the safety position. They could use more defensive line depth. They potentially could address right tackle. They will be looking for speed at receiver, although that could be addressed in the draft.
Mike Jenkins at cornerback is a name that has come up. On the offensive line, they could bring back Eric Winston or target Zach Strief. Bryan McCann is a guy I think should come back as corner depth, gunner on punt coverage and perhaps kick returner. There are plenty of depth D-linemen to look at.
