Mock drafts and more mock drafts. We read them and get mad or we read them and get hopeful. The truth is that they are all just playing out possible scenarios.
In the latest set of draft projections by SB Nation's Matthew Fairburn, the Arizona Cardinals select a quarterback far earlier than most expect.
In the second round, the Cardinals take Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas, who Fairburn believes is a lock for being overdrafted.
He's a strong-armed quarterback with the size and athleticism to develop into a difference-maker at the position. He's not perfect, but if Thomas is given time to sit behind an established starter for a bit, he has a chance to become a starter.
However, let us not forget the first round pick at number 20. Fairburn projects Michigan State cornerback Darqueze Dennard, who is the fourth corner to go in the first round.
With all of the top pass rushers and offensive tackles off the board, the Cardinals turn to the secondary, where they could use another option across from Patrick Peterson. Darqueze Dennard isn't quite the athlete some of the other corners in this class are, so he falls a bit. Arizona doesn't mind, finding another reliable cover man on the boundary.
Dennard is believed by some to be the best cover guy in the group of corners in this draft. It isn't a terrible pick at all. However, the Thomas pick in the second round is a head scratcher. Arizona will want a player in the second to ideally impact Year 1. That won't happen with Carson Palmer starting. Of course, last year's second round pick, Kevin Minter, hasn't done much, but that is because the team ended up signing Karlos Dansby.
Tackle Taylor Lewan goes at number 18 and linebacker Anthony Barr goes at number 19. Zack Martin and Antonio Richardson are still on the board and go at 26 and 27, respectively.
Early in the first round, four quarterbacks get selected in the first eight picks. Blake Bortles goes first overall, Teddy Bridgewater goes third, Johnny Manziel gets taken fifth and Derek Carr gets drafted eighth.
What are your thoughts on this mock? Do you like where the players go here? What about the Cardinals and Dennard and Thomas? Is the second round too early for a project quarterback?
