Hey ! Pssssst. Come over here. I have a secret.

How This Weeks Draft Rumor impacts The Cardinals

The apparent rumor of the week, the last week of the draft, is that the Browns are looking to trade. The Browns are rumored to want to move up in the first round. While this may or may not be true, I thought that it may be interesting to examine the impact it could have on the Arizona Cardinals.

First of all, there is a thought out there that the Browns may want to move up into the first round by acquiring a 3rd first round pick. This rumor is based on the theory the Browns want to acquire as much first round positional talent as possible while still enabling them to draft a franchise quarterback of they're liking.

Second of all, there is the thought out there that the browns may want to just improve they're second first round pick position from 26 and target a quarterback, like Carr, who they feel may not make it past the Cardinals.

If either scenario is true, it may impact the Cardinals. The Cardinals are in a terrific position at 20 where they are the falling off point for next tier talent. It is also a great position for slipping talent. Consequently, the Cardinals pick 20 is an ideal spot for the Browns to trade into. I think the Cardinals are also interested and willing trade partners based on the GM, Steve Keim's stated desire to acquire more picks. As well, the Cardinals don't really have any notable holes to fill that they won't be able to fill from the 2nd round on, with a good draft. In a deep draft where the Cardinals only have six picks, let's explore the possibilities of a trade scenario with the Browns if rumors turn out to be true.

The Browns have a total of 10 draft picks in the upcoming draft. Here are they're picks and point values:

1-4 / 1800

1-26 / 700

2-35 / 550

3-71 / 235

3-83 / 175

4-106 / 92

4-127 / 49

5-145 / 39.5

6-180 / 25.4

7-218 / 12.6

The Cardinals have a total of 6 draft picks.

1-20 / 850

2-52 / 380

3-84 / 170

4-120 / 62.0

5-160 / 31.8

6-196 / 18.6

Now let's look at trade scenario 1 which allows the Browns to acquire a third 1st round selection, pick 20 of the Cardinals. This scenario would require that the Browns ship a 2nd, a 3rd and a 4th rounder to the Cardinals. The Cardinals will be moving out of the first round entirely but they will be the 3rd pick in the 2nd round as well as pick up two extra picks in the process.

Now let's look at trade scenario 2 which allows the Browns to move up to pick 20 from 26 while giving up they're second of two 3rd round selections. The Cardinals move down a bit to 26 and might lose a little value there in the first round, but they are able to pickup an extra 3rd round selection without getting out of the first round all together.

Now, I'm not saying this is going to happen. The Browns rumor is just what it is; a rumor. If the Browns were interested in making such a trade, do you like either of these scenario's or both or none at all ?
