Its Preseason People

I think Cardinal fans starting to forgetting what the purpose of preseason is for. We lose a couple of games and fans are disappointed with the teams effort, and want to already press the panic button. This year carries high expectation and fans want a winner now, but realistically lets not hold our breath in preseason.

The purpose for preseason is not about winning or losing, its about preparation for the regular season. There is a reason these games don't count, its about finding out what works and what doesn't, and who fits in where. Regardless if Carson Palmer throws 5-5 or 2-11, or the Dirty D holds to 0 or gives up 50 points; at the end of the day none of it counts.

Players and staff use the preseason to get insyc with the playbook and game-day preparations. They find out what depth they have at each position, and what players fit during specific situation. That's why you see a lot of questionableplay calls and plays that don't work, and the ones that do get integrated in to the playbook. Coaches have that luxury to try new things. It also gives some of the unproven players like John Brown an Kareem Martin to display their talents and hopefully find a spot on the team.

To be honest, I'd be more worried if my team was winning preseason games. Because 1) they are giving up too much of their playbook, and its easier for opposing teams to scheme against them. It shows that they have a small playbook because they are using the same plays that work. When regular season hits those plays end up not working. And 2) they aren't utilizing the depth of their players, they don't find out what player fits in the system.

Look at the 2007-08 Detroit Lions they went 4-0 in preseason, only to go 0-16 in the regular season. Meanwhile, the New England Patriots went 2-2 in preseason, and 16-0 in regular season. I'm not trying to say preseason it isn't important, but as fans we shouldn't take it so seriously.
