Do you want Monti to play “Let’s Make a Deal”?

Look at that man pictured above. That’s Cardinals’ GM Monti Ossenfort. As we fans know, Monti has been very busy signing players in free agency.

Jones brings a high motor and was the Bears’ Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee in 2023, always quick to talk some trash and energize the defense. Nonetheless, this payday dramatically outpaces his down-to-down production. He does have some occasional splash plays that illustrate what made him a Day 2 draft pick, but this is probably the deal we view as the most player-friendly signing so far this offseason.

With the added and important context that there were virtually zero free-agent options at cornerback not nearing 30 years old, it makes sense that Murphy-Bunting was able to cash in big time. The former No. 39 overall pick has good size at 6-foot and 195 pounds, and he recorded four interceptions to go along with nine more pass breakups over the past two seasons. Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon used to coach defensive backs, so he’ll try to tap into Murphy-Bunting’s physical gifts in his third stop.

Nichols is a rock-solid player on the interior who can contribute on all three downs, and he has some wiggle to get upfield as a pass rusher, with a low center of gravity that helps him weaponize his undersized frame. Arizona needs all the help it can get along the defensive line, and Nichols is a good start.

The actual grades will depend on how well Jonathan Gannon and his staff can coach up the new talent. The new players are excited about the energy at the Cardinals’ training facility, and they concurrently describe the Cardinals as “an ascending team.”

Interestingly, here are PFF’s free agency grades for the 3 teams ahead of the Cardinals in the 2024 NFL Draft:

CHI : B

WASH: A

NE: B+

At least in PFF’s minds, the Bears, Commanders and Patriots have done a commendable job of paving their way toward taking a QB at the top of the draft, which, of course, they and every NFL pundit under the sun believe is their top priority.

Yet, now that the Vikings have acquired the #23 pick via a trade, the speculation is that they did so with the intention of packaging their #11 and #23 picks to move up into the top 4 to select their own choice for QB.

Rumors have been swirling since the NFL Combine that Michigan’s QB J.J. McCarthy has been rapidly ascending up draft boards and that McCarthy may actually be rated higher on some teams’ draft boards than Drake May and/or Jayden Daniels.

Another rumor involving the Vikings is that they would not have made the trade to acquire the #23 pick had they not had “assurances” of moving up into the top 4 of the draft —- in other words, they already have a deal in place.

If this is as true, the question is —- which team would have given the Vikings such assurances?

CHI —- no, not after they just traded Justin Fields to the Steelers

WAS —- no, not after they just traded Sam Howell to the Seahawks (with Marcus Mariota as bridge QB)

NE —- perhaps, seeing as Boston Globe NFL writer Ben Volin wrote yesterday that there could be a belief that the Patriots could get a good year out of bridge QB Jacoby Brissett, if they believe it would be in their best interest this season to stockpile draft picks. However, new HC Jerod Mayo has been making it clear that the plan all along has been to take a QB at #3 and develop him a year behind Brissett.

ARI —- perhaps, given that Monti Ossenfort has in his brief term as GM shown a penchant for acquiring draft capital. While for over a year Cardinals’ fans have been assuming that WR Marvin Harrison Jr. is, without a doubt, Monti Ossenfort’s #1 priority in the draft, could it be that Ossenfort has been hoping all along that the #4 pick would be a hot spot for a big-time trade, the way the #3 pick was last year?

The Cardinals needed to add talent to a talent depleted roster, but Monti wants most of that talent to come from within, and that is what a good GM should do.

Today we discuss what will happen in picks 1-4 in the 2024 NFL Draft. Patriots’ superfan (our cousin from Boston) shares his thoughts about what the Patriots will do at #3 and what the Cardinals will do at #4. He will tell us which player he wants the Pats to take at #3. His choice may come as a surprise —- or, then again, maybe not.

How do you feel about Monti’s most recent moves?

If you haven’t had the chance yet, have a listen to the interviews that Sean Murphy Bunting, Bilal Nichols, Justin Jones, Mack Wilson, DeeJay Dallas and Jonah Williams conducted yesterday. The common themes were “high energy in the building” and “the Cardinals are an ascending team.”

My favorite clip from the interviews was this one from DT Bilal Nichols who is already embracing a leadership role on the defense:

#AZCardinals DL Bilal Nichols said he wanted to make a statement.

I asked.

It was great to learn from DT Justin Jones that he and Bilal Nichols formed a bond while playing at the Senior Bowl. I think Monti and crew picked up on this when they were targeting the two DTs they were most interested in adding to the defense.

That said, Monti and the team could not have heard a more important and necessary message than what Bilal Nichols delivered.

Another strong message was delivered by T Jonah Williams who said that he will play the position the coaches want him to —- that no matter what, he wants to provide his excellence as a tackle to the team’s offense.

While we have been debating whether Jonah Williams should play LT or RT and whether it would be best for PJJ to stay at RT or flip over the LT —- it’s good to know the Cardinals have two young, talented tackles who can play either side of the line. Seeing as both Williams and PJJ played RT last year, one of them will be playing his 2nd season at that spot.

What adds some context as to how good Jonah Williams was in 2021 at LT, is the fact that every day in practice he was able to take his pass pro reps versus DE Trey Hendrickson, which helped prepare him to block DEs T.J. Watt (PIT), Myles Garrett (CLE) and Matthew Judon (BAL) twice during the season in his own division.

2021 NFL Sack Leaders:

T,J. Watt —-22.5 —- #1 in NFL

Myles Garrett —- 16.0; —- #3 in NFL

Trey Hendrickson —- 14.0 —- #5 in NFL

Matthew Judon —- 12.5 —- #7 in NFL

One could argue that no tackle in the NFL has had better training to block the top pass rushers in the league than Jonah Williams.

As of right now, the top edge rushers in the NFL West for each team are (with 2023 sacks and rankings):

Nick Bosa (SF) —-10.5 —- #17

Leonard Floyd (SF) —- 10.5 —- #17 (BUF)

Boye Mafe (SEA) —- 9.0 —- #28

:Byron Young (LAR) —-8.0 —- #37

A Wonderful Day in the Neighborhood for Mr. Rodgers:

As was the case last year, Monti was like Domino’s Pizza in delivering on Jeff Rodgers’ special teams’ free agent wish list, this year so far, Monti has been able to retain the trio of K Matt Prater (in year 2 of a 2-year contract), P Blake Gillikin (re-signed to 2-year deal) and LS Aaron Brewer (re-signed to a 1-year contract), plus retaining STs stalwart Bobby Price and, perhaps one of the nicest surprises of free agency thus far, adding KR/PR/Gunner DeeJay Dallas (signed to a 3-year deal).

I think he’s a superb fit in drew Petzing’s offense and is a nifty compliment to Kyler Murray and Clayton Tune. Did you see the way Ridder threw over the middle versus Notre Dame (who then had Kyle Hamilton at FS)? Play action passes over the middle for Desmond Ridder should be a forte for the former Bearcat.

If you listen to Red Rain later today, Paul Buker (“my cousin from Boston and i are going to talk in depth about Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy —- whom both of us like a lot). I think that Desmond Ridder and J.J. McCarthy have a lot in common —- and you may have heard me say this before, but if there is a QB in this draft who is tailor-made for Drew Petzing’s offense, that QB is J.J. McCarthy.

Thus, not only did the Cardinals acquire a J.J. McCarthy type QB in Desmond Ridder (who has 2 years of NFL experience and an 8-9 NFL record), the Cardinals have him for 2 years at salaries of $1,2M this year and $1.4M in 2025.

A friend on Twitter asked me this morning what to make of Hollywood signing with the Chiefs.

My responses:

I think having Hollywood back on. one year prove-it deal would have put enormous pressure on Kyler to want to feed his buddy. If Cards draft MHJ, there will be pressure on Kyler to click with him as well.

This offense is at its best when they are running the football and beating teams over the middle on play action with TEs and WRs like Greg Dortch who relish making catches and turning them into big YAC plays.

He asked, “aren’t you surprised Hollywood walked?”

Hollywood gets a chance to vie for a ring with Mahomes, why are you surprised with that? Plus, he got a package worth up to $11M from KC.

The Arizona Cardinals will be in the market for a wide receiver for sure now.

The Arizona Cardinals have virtually locked in that they will be drafting a wide receiver early in the 2024 NFL Draft.

That has happened because Marquise “Hollywood” Brown has decided to sign a one-year prove it deal with the Kansas City Chiefs for $8 million, with a chance to get up to $11 million total.

Brown was on pace for a monster first year with the Arizona Cardinals, before injuries set in.

From there, his tenure with the Cardinals can only be described as one that just missed.

He came back and Kyler Murray went down injured.

Then in 2023, he and Josh Dobbs just never gelled, and he only got three games with Kyler Murray before he was lost for the season again injured.

This was an unfortunate pairing and just never worked, and while it sucks to see the loss of a good player and probably even more a good pick, you hope that Hollywood can get healthy and find his form again. It is just unfortunate it never happened with the Arizona Cardinals.
