NFL Mock Draft 2012: Projections Affecting the Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals have been long connected to offensive linemen as we all wait for the 2012 NFL Draft. But projections can change weekly. It is time to take a look at the players that are or could be connected to the Cardinals and the NFL Draft.

Our own ROTB mock draft had a surprise, having WR Justin Blackmon fall a la Matt Leinart to the 13th pick, where Arizona scoops him up to recreate the elite passing game that was so successful with Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and Steve Breaston.

2012 NFL Draft: Looking At OLB Bruce Irvin

Photo

Despite the development of both O'Brien Schofield and Sam Acho, you really can never have enough players who can rush the passer. Plus, all teams need depth and young talent to develop. One position the Arizona Cardinals will likely try to address in the draft is outside linebacker, as the team will need to replace Joey Porter and because of the fact that Clark Haggans is not getting younger.

Since you cannot draft everyone in the first round, let's look at a player that will be available later in the draft and could fit for Arizona.

NFL Mock Draft: Todd McShay Also Projects Arizona Cardinals Will Select David DeCastro

Photo

It was just a year ago when around this time the early mock drafts all had the Arizona Cardinals picking one guy -- Von Miller. He was seen as a perfect fit for the Cardinals' defensive schemes. Right now, there seems to be a popular pick for Arizona, but his fit is not as great because he doesn't fit a very pressing need. That would be Stanford guard David DeCastro.

The latest to have the Arizona taking the highly touted guard is ESPN Todd McShay, who recently released his mock draft 2.0 (Insider access is require to read the whole round).

2012 NFL Draft: Scouting Reports for Whitney Mercilus

With the pass rush being a hot topic and recently another esteemed Revenge of the Birds writer mocking this man to the Cardinals I decided why not and pulled up a couple of Illinois games and had a look. Pass rusher is likely going to be well on the radar of the Cardinals as they enter their draft preparations and no doubt they will be doing their due diligence on all the prospects available including Whitney Mercilus.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: David DeCastro Is The New Popular Pick For The Arizona Cardinals

Photo

As we go through the weeks leading up to the NFL draft, we are going to see all sorts of mock drafts. Some will stay steady and some will vary greatly. This week, the Cardinals are projected to go with offensive line help, but not at the tackle position, while a possible target for the tackle position goes before the Cardinals even select.

Who are the expected picks?

2012 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Nick Perry, USC, DE/OLB

Photo

Arguably the most important aspect of defensive play in the NFL is generating a quality pass rush. Every April when the NFL draft rolls around those who can get to the quarterback are valued highly and this year will be no different. The projection for a pass rusher in the 3-4 defensive scheme is an even more complicated process because you are projecting a player to play in a position he has not played in college and in all likelihood you have seen very little of him doing things that he will spend a fair chunk of his NFL career doing, namely playing in coverage. One such player who might be a target for the Arizona Cardinals in the 2012 first round is USC's junior pass rusher Nick Perry.
