With the seventeenth pick of the Revenge of the Birds community mock draft, the San Francisco 49ers select...
Anthony Davis| OT | Rutgers
GM: lorenzothedog
Strengths: Great size; has long arms. Athletic. Good pass blocker; shows very good upper body strength and knows how to use his hands effectively. Has a strong initial punch. Shows he has a good kick slide and can get into a very strong anchor. Shows good footwork, he can be very light on his feet at times. Shows ability to mirror defenders. He can be very quick for his size. Has a powerful base, he sits into his stance and anchors on contact. He has the power to hold the point of attack against the bull-rush. Looks natural on the move in the run game. Does a nice job breaking down in space and hitting/sealing targets at the second level. Displays natural power on contact as an in-line run blocker, consistently turning defenders away from the ball and saying on blocks He knows how to finish blocks and will take his defender to the ground. He can get downfield and make blocks in the second level. Is able to pull and trap. Takes good angles when getting down field. Has good versatility can play LT or RT.
Weaknesses: Highly inconsistent overall. Inconsistent techniques in run and pass blocking. Has a reputation of being an underachiever. Has had trouble with weight. Poor intangibles. Stance could be improved. He is often caught very off-balanced he needs to work on being more consistent with his footwork. Players can shed him occasionally once he tries to latch on to them.
Why the 49ers draft him: It is reported head coach Mike Singletary really wanted to draft a tackle last year.
Davis held a private workout last Tuesday the 49ers had two scouts in attendance. On the following Thursday Davis had dinner with coach Mike Singletary and had a full day of meetings scheduled with SF. OT is SF's primary need. Anthony Davis has a lot of talent - has a great frame and size - is very athletic and has the ability to be effective in both the run and the pass - he has the tools and immense potential to be an all-star caliber offensive tackle if he improves his work ethic and focus. Mike Singletary sees himself as a motivator if Mike likes this is their guy.
