2-5-11: Arizona Cardinals Bird Droppings

Some stuff before Super Bowl weekend. Also, I might not post one of these before the Super Bowl, there will be a Game Thread though.

Missing That Super Feeling
Super Bowl week tough to watch for Cardinals

Super comments from Whiz about DC/QB
Coach Ken Whisenhunt is at the Super Bowl doing the rounds at the media center in Texas. I am not there. Kent Somers is among those who is (and Mike Jurecki informed me a two-segment Whiz interview will air today on XTRA 910 starting at 4:30 p.m.). Kent blogged about a few topics Whiz touched on. The most pressing:

Steve Young: State of Cards' QB situation - NFC West Blog - ESPN
For the fourth time, a big thanks goes to Hall of Fame quarterback and ESPN analyst Steve Young for taking time Friday morning to discuss quarterback situations for each NFC West team. I'm breaking out his thoughts and adding my own, continuing with a look at the situation in Seattle, where Matt Hasselbeck can become a free agent after following a poor regular season with a productive postseason.

(Anyone catch where Sando messed up in the above paragraph?)

Whisenhunt: Roster turnover took its toll - NFC West Blog - ESPN
The Arizona Cardinals experienced more roster turnover than most from 2009 to 2010. They felt it, too.

All Signs Point To Butler To Be Cardinals DC - SB Nation Arizona
As the Super Bowl approaches and the Green bay Packers and Pittsburgh prepare for the game that will either elevate Ben Roethlisberger to potential Hall of Fame status or place Aaron Rodgers firmly into the hearts of Packer fans as their quarterback and cast off any last memory of Brett Favre. However, one of the side stories has been that of the Steelers defensive staff. The Cardinals have been long rumored to be waiting to interview Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler for their vacant defensive coordinator position. He is a guy who is close with Ken Whisenhunt, he runs the Dick LeBeau defensive schemes and he is primed to move into that position. While Todd Bowles impressed Whisenhunt in his interview, it is apparent that Whiz has been waiting to see if he will have a shot at Butler.

All's well that ends well for Tomlin, Whisenhunt
Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt arrived in Dallas on Thursday to pillage a Pittsburgh team he once called family. Mike Tomlin arrived in Pittsburgh four years ago to coach a team whose players didn’t want him. Both men have enjoyed success in their new jobs. Whisenhunt breathed life into a dormant Cardinals franchise, taking it to two playoff berths and a Super Bowl in his third season.

Phoenix Suns give up another lead, lose to Oklahoma City Thunder
The .500 mark is the shelf the Suns aren't quite tall enough to reach yet. They looked like a team that could have grown into such a stature Friday night, playing well and leading a quality Oklahoma City visitor for the most of the game before losing the game's final 90 seconds in a 111-107 loss at US Airways Center. The Suns left heated about late-game officiating, particularly a traveling no-call on Kevin Durant in a two-point game with 14 seconds to go, and regretful over losing a game it led by seven entering the fourth quarter.

FOXSports.com's post-Senior Bowl mock draft
With Green Bay and Pittsburgh still battling for the Lombardi Trophy (and the 31st and 32nd picks), all but two draft positions are set. Here’s the latest look at how I see April’s first round shaking out:

The top 10 Super Bowl quarterbacks - Shutdown Corner - NFL  - Yahoo! Sports
This is the first of many Super Bowl lists we'll put up at Shutdown Corner, and we might as well start with the quarterbacks. Not every Super Bowl has been won with a great quarterback at the helm, but since 23 of 44 possible MVPs have been quarterbacks, it's a good place to begin. Before the arguments set off, this list is just about which quarterbacks have been the greatest Super Bowl performers, win or lose. The "Greatest of All Time" argument is for another day; this is our take on the top 10 for the NFL's biggest game. Neither quarterback playing in Super Bowl XLV -- Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers-- is on this list, but each one has a very realistic shot at an all-time legacy under the right circumstances.

(Kurt Warner is in second place behind Montana)

Steve Young: State of Seattle's QB situation - NFC West Blog - ESPN
For the third time, a big thanks goes to Hall of Fame quarterback and ESPN analyst Steve Young for taking time Friday morning to discuss quarterback situations for each NFC West team. I'm breaking out his thoughts and adding my own, continuing with a look at the situation in Seattle, where Matt Hasselbeck can become a free agent after following a poor regular season with a productive postseason.

Phoenix Suns' Steve Nash not selected for NBA All-Star Game
In every Suns winning season with an All-Star Game (no game was played in 1999), the Suns had an All-Star representative. The Suns still could turn around the season, but a 23-24 record was the one statistic that kept Steve Nash off the West All-Star team despite individual stats that are similar to his MVP and All-Star years.

Amazing video of ice falling off Super Bowl stadium - Shutdown Corner - NFL  - Yahoo! Sports
Local news helicopters captured amazing video of the ice falling from the site of Sunday's Super Bowl. It's unclear whether the shot below is the slide that caused the injuries or whether it was taken after (our guess is the latter). Either way, it gives a good sense of the power of the falling ice:

Deadspin takes aim at another Jets quarterback | ProFootballTalk
In August, the folks at Deadspin first introduced us to the high-tech habits (allegedly) of Brett Favre, via his cockeyed courtship of Jenn Sterger. In October, audio and video evidence emerged, making it a much bigger story than it previously was. (Then again, some didn’t think the story was all that, um, big.) Now, Deadspin promises to publish a story on Tuesday regarding Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and an alleged relationship with a 17-year-old girl.
