The Houston Texans are up. Offensively, these guys are set. Matt Schaub does a solid job getting the ball down the field. Andre Johnson is perhaps the game's best receiver. and Arian Foster is a force to be reckoned with in the running game. Their problems all stem from the inability keep their opponents from scoring.
Their draft needs are all on the defensive side of the ball -- on the line, a linebacker and help in the secondary. azcardswinez and I bring you the picks for today.
The Minnesota Vikings are now on the clock and J Steezy and Jessesb are up for the next picks. Email me your picks and explanations by 11PM AZ time tonight. You know the rules -- no trades, no drafting guys that have been drafted.
Azcardwinez:
Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska
With the Houston Texans picking apart defenses last year, ranking fourth in passing yards and seventh in rushing yards, there is no need for the Texans to improve their potent offense. Now on the other side of the ball you have a defense that was flat out HORRIBLE against the pass!! Opponents threw the ball all over Houston last year, the Texans ranked dead LAST, 32nd in passing yards defense, and a decent 13th in rushing yards on the defensive side of the ball. So in my opinion this is a no brainer pick with the CB from Nebraska still on the board. With the 11th pick in the NFL draft the Houston Texans select Prince Amukamara. The six foot, 206 pound CB will help improve Houston's passing defense instantly and for years to come. Prince brings physicality to the secondary and he will help out Kareem Jackson on the other side of the field. This won't fix all of their defensive problems but if they can find a good pass rusher in free agency or the 2nd round of the draft they just might get over the hump in 2011 and make the playoffs.
Jess Root:
JJ Watts, DE, Wisconsin
With the top corners off the board, Houston has to look at the defensive front. Ideally, they woudl trade down a little bit to make this pick, but since in this mock draft there is no trading down, we will go with the best guy for the Texans. Watts showed mobility in the combine and should fit in well in the new 3-4 scheme that Wade Phillips is bringing in. He is hig character and has a good motor. His presence will improve one of the NFL's worst defenses from day one.
