We now reach the first of the playoff teams in the draft. The Kansas City Chiefs make their selection, with needs on the offensive line, at RB and WR and a couple of positions on the defense. Some linemen have already been selected. The most talented skill players are also unavailable. What direction do they go?
Nick Thoreson and I make the picks and they are differing picks. Let us know which you like more and why.
The Inidanapolis Colts are now on the clock, and Kdean75 and Jessesb are the ones to make the picks. Email me your picks and explanations by 11PM AZ time tonight. You know the rules -- no trades, no drafting guys that have been drafted.
Remember that what makes this even better is healthy debate. Put in your two cents.
Nick Thoreson:
Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor
Although the Chiefs could go OT, they will not with Castonzo and Solder gone. I think that Scott Pioli will again copy cat his tenure in New England and put that big anchor in the 3-4 ala Vince Wilfork. Phil Taylor will be a huge space eater in the middle of that defensive line next to Tamba Hali. This could be a develop a great front 7 with a young and talented backfield. Taylor has seemed to have some weight problems in the past which is a concern to some scouts but he lost 10 more pounds from his already slimmed down combine weight, with that said, the athleticism that he shows especially with that huge frame and the need of a NT in the 3-4 makes this a perfect combination for the Chiefs.
Me:
Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
I like the Taylor selection and he fits what the Chiefs do. However, the team also has a need at tackle on the offensive line, particularly at right tackle. It just so happens that Gabe Carimi projects to be a very good right tackle and he is rated higher on the Chiefs' draft board. Carimi faced off against a number of great defensive players and was great. He has great size and can be versatile on the line. So while Taylor is a good pick, they see Carimi as a better one that will maintain the team's goal of controlling the line of scrimmage offensively and run the ball (that's exactly how the Badgers played as well)
