Athletics rough up Josh Collmenter, beat Diamondbacks in series opener
The concerns that existed near the back of the Diamondbacks' bullpen were only exacerbated with news that closer J.J. Putz had landed on the disabled list with elbow problems. And then Friday night's game started, and even more questions sprouted up, these ones concerning a soft-tossing right-hander whose delivery doesn't seem to be quite as deceptive as it once was. The Oakland Athletics hammered Josh Collmenter on Friday night, chasing him before he could finish five innings and sending the Diamondbacks to a 5-4 loss, their fifth in the past six games.

Phoenix Mercury beat Chicago Sky to move back to .500
It was a brief moment of beauty. However short. However necessary. The Mercury began Friday night slow and tedious until a 41.6-second, seven-point beauty of a burst just before halftime gave them momentum. That run cut what was once a 15-point lead to one and led to momentum the Mercury would ride to a 97-84 victory against the Chicago Sky.

Phoenix Coyotes add, lose pieces early in free agency
The Coyotes wasted no time getting into the free-agent action Friday, filling holes and adding toughness. The team signed former Vancouver Canucks forward Raffi Torres, former Tampa Bay goaltender Mike Smith and former Washington Capitals center Boyd Gordon. The Coyotes also re-signed forward Radim Vrbata. On the other side of things, Phoenix lost centers Vernon Fiddler (Dallas), Andrew Ebbett (Vancouver) and Eric Belanger (Edmonton), as well as defenseman Ed Jovanovski (Florida).

Arizona Diamondbacks place J.J. Putz on disabled list
Closer J.J. Putz was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow tendinitis, but Putz and General Manager Kevin Towers are hopeful he'll be ready to come off the disabled list immediately after the All-Star break. Putz, who said the elbow was aching after he worked three consecutive games last week against the Royals and Tigers, underwent tests that showed only swelling in the back of his elbow, Towers said.

Larry Scott's vision realized in new Pac-12 Conference
Larry Scott was wrapping up a late business lunch at a downtown San Francisco restaurant this week, taking one last sip of coffee, parting ways with a handshake and sliding one booth over to start another meeting with new visitors almost simultaneously. A year after rocking the college sports world with expansion plans, the commissioner of what officially becomes the Pac-12 Conference on Friday with new members Utah and Colorado doesn't waste a moment. There's a network to launch, marketing opportunities to pursue and a host of other issues to capitalize on with the momentum behind the league's growing national spotlight.

NFL News:

"Major strides" made on revenue split | ProFootballTalk
With the players believing that the owners had reneged on a "verbal handshake" deal regarding the revenue split and with the owners insisting that everything remains negotiable until a deal is done (that’s fancy talk for "bait-and-switch"), the mood of the labor talks had turned gloomy on Thursday. Enter Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan, who by all accounts become much more than a fly on the wall and stepped up to prevent the talks from collapsing, as explained by Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com.
