The injury to Ryan Williams against the Packers left a big hole in the Cardinals backfield, but now could someone from the Packers help fill that hole? It has been reported that Packers running back Ryan Grant is in danger of not making the team, James Starks, John Kuhn, and Alex Green are apparently locks to survive the final roster cuts but Grant could be in a battle with former Sun Devil Dimitri Nance.
EDIT: Shortly after this was written, there was also an update saying that Grant took a $1 million dollar pay cut which could help him stay with the team. This is all just speculation anyway.
More info after the jump.
Our friends at Acme Packing Company don't think that the Packers will cut Grant to keep Nance, and here are the thoughts from one of their bloggers on the subject.
My best guess at the moment is that Grant will remain as the starter, Starks will frequently replace him, and Green will be the third down back. But I could see Starks and Green emerge as the top two backs, and Nance becomes the third down back. If Green can do what Grant can do, plus Nance is a better third down back than Green, then the Packers might have a tough choice. If you're looking to see if Grant can keep his roster spot over the next two preseason games, don't compare him to Nance, but watch and decide whether Green can replace Grant.
Personally, I think that Grant would be a good choice to bring in if he doesn't wind up staying with Green Bay. He is coming off of an injury, but when he was healthy in 2008 and 2009 he ran for 1,200 yards and he would make a good compliment to Beanie Wells. And if Grant doesn't work, there are still plenty of backs out there and we have discussed this in a Fanpost earlier this week. Veterans like Brian Westbrook, and Clinton Portis are options, as are guys in crowded backfields like Tashard Choice or Steve Slaton who could be released before the regular season begins. Of course the Cardinals could also stick with that they have too and see how Alfonso Smith and LaRod Stephens-Howling do at backing up Beanie.
So, would you like to bring in Grant, stick with what we have now, or look for someone else that could be available?
