On Saturday, Jess put up a post regarding Bobby Massie and how CBS' Rob Rang believes he will be the most immediate impact player for the Arizona Cardinals. That may be true considering the lack of depth at the tackle position and the collegiate experience that Massie brings with him to the NFL. There is the looming possibility that he is the starting right tackle come week one of the regular season.
So that post got me thinking a bit. The overwhelming opinion is that Massie will start week one, but how about the Cardinals' first round selection, Michael Floyd? When will he become a starting wide receiver across from Larry Fitzgerald?
We all know the golden rule of head coach, Ken Whisenhunt. If he does not have to, he would prefer not to start rookies at any position on the field. That is always the way he has operated since becoming the leader of this football team. But with Floyd, can he afford to bring that much talent off of the bench?
Even if he doesn't start right away, Floyd will undoubtedly get his fair share of snaps on the field. But there is something about being labeled a starter that pays dividends for a player's confidence.
Andre Roberts and Early Doucet are candidates to be starters as well, but many see them both as slot players, not guys that are going to draw defensive attention on the outside. It would stand to reason that Roberts would be a perfect fit in the slot given his height and speed. Couple that with the deep threat of Floyd and Fitz, along with a much improved Rob Housler, and all of a sudden, you get a dynamic and versatile offense.
So if Floyd doesn't start right away, when will he obtain that distinction? Will it be part of the way through the season or will he not start at all as a rookie? Personally, I see him starting somewhere around week 2-3. I don't believe he will start right away given Ken Whisenhunt's rule, but, like Massie, Floyd brings plenty of collegiate experience with him and he should be fairly ready to start right off the bat.
What do you think? When will Michael Floyd become a starting wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals? Vote in the poll and leave your comments below.
