NFL roster cuts: Arizona Cardinals place Jonathan Cooper on injured reserve, say goodbye to 13

The team still has eight moves to make.

USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Cardinals began the final trimming of their roster on Friday. They have to get down to 53 players by Saturday at 3 PM Arizona time. They have eight moves to go after the 14 transactions they made on Friday.

They placed first round guard Jonathan Cooper on season ending injured reserve (rather than wait and place him on the IR that allows him to return. He will get the entire season to recover and train.

After that, they said goodbye to 13 players. They are:

  • S Jonathon Amaya
  • C Adam Bice
  • WR Dan Buckner
  • DT David Carter
  • TE Alex Gottlieb
  • WR Charles Hawkins
  • G Senio Kelemete
  • LB Zack Nash
  • LB Colin Parker
  • TE Richard Quinn
  • G Chilo Rachal
  • S Curtis Taylor
  • WR Mike Thomas

This means initially that undrafted safety Tony Jefferson has made it, and receivers Jaron Brown and Kerry Taylor seem to have made the cut.

The decision on quarterback Ryan Lindley has not yet been made, nor what the team will do with tight end Jeff King.

Rachal's cut is perhaps a surprise, but Mike Gibson, who seems to have made the team for now, can play guard and center. Verstility are key in the OL depth.

Special teams standout Jonathon Amaya was let go. That is a bit of a surprise personally. I thought he was a lock because of that.

Any of your thoughts?
