Daryn Colledge a "Likely" Cap Casualty

The Arizona Cardinals have their financial situation cut out for them. While it may not be the massive change they had to control last year, it's still a sizable effort. There have been several players talked about, Fitzgerald, Dockett, Colledge, and Palmer.

NFL Trade Rumors put out a piece regarding a quote by Mike Jurecki. Following the announcement that Arizona would pursue Chiefs LT Branden Albert via free agency, he said Daryn Colledge would "likely" be a cap casualty this offseason. If this is the case, Arizona has a few options...

If we cut him now, we suffer a cap hit of nearly five million, while opening up three million for us. This would the team approximately six million dollars of cap room to work with for the 2014 free agency.

However, if the team decides to cut him now, they can also use a June 1 designation on him. What this means is that only Colledge's base salary and any bonuses will count against this years cap, everything else would count against our 27 million cap next season. A drawback towards this idea though, is that until June 1st, Arizona would still only have six million to work with.

If this happens, it goes to show several theories... That Arians and staff believe enough in Earl Watford and Paul Fanaika next season, or that they have their eyes on a guard in the draft early.

Colledge has not been great in Arizona, but his play has been consistent and he has been willing to move around, as he was pegged to play right guard this season before Jonathan Cooper's in jury and he also got some work in at center in training camp. His loss would not be too heavily felt, with Jonathan Cooper returning from a broken leg, and Fanaika having played well enough this season.
