The Arizona Cardinals did not sign cornerback Antonion Cromartie. They did, though, re-sign cornerback Bryan McCann to a one-year contract.
McCann (5-11, 185) re-joins the Cardinals after playing in the final six games last season and recorded two special teams tackles. He re-signed with the Cardinals on November 19 after spending the offseason and training camp with Arizona. The four-year veteran joined the Cardinals in 2013 after playing eight games with the Miami Dolphins in 2012.
After entering the NFL with the Cowboys as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2010 out of SMU, McCann played in nine games as a rookie and had two touchdowns (101-yard INT return and 97-yard punt return) in addition to 15 tackles. In 2011, he played in 12 games with the Cowboys (two), Ravens (three) and Raiders (seven). For his career, McCann has played in 35 games and has 29 tackles on defense, one sack, one interception and nine special teams tackles.
This signing is going to be an underrated move. He might not offer much on defense -- that will play out in offseason workouts and in camp -- but he does offer experience and depth at the position and he does offer special teams play. He is a very good gunner in punt coverage and can return kicks, giving the team another option with Ted Ginn. But until other moves are made, he will likely start as the nickel corner on defense.
This will not likely be the last signing at the position. Currently the team only has Patrick Peterson, Jerraud Powers, Justin Bethel and now McCann on the roster. They carried as many as nine or 10 corners in camp last year, so for those thinking this is the guy that is being signed instead of Cromartie, no worries. This will not change anything on that front.
