NFL free agency 2014: Arizona Cardinals team needs

New, comments

A look at where the Cardinals could be looking for help ion free agency.

Free agency for the NFL officially begins on March 11, with teams able to talk to agents and negotiate beginning March 8. As busy as Arizona Cardinals general manager Steve Keim was last offseason, you have to figure that the team will be aggressive again.

The Cardinals have needs at a few positions. Here are the biggest positions at need the way I see it.

Offensive tackle:

The Cardinals rolled with Bradley Sowell last season. He wasn't absolutely atrocious and he was a battler, but the team really wants to upgrade on the offensive line. At right tackle, 2013 starter Eric Winston is going to be a free agent and, while Bobby Massie is on the roster, he is not a lock at the position.

It is expected that Arizona will be a player in the left tackle market. Whether they target another player at right tackle is yet to be seen. They could, but by getting a left tackle, it would create a battle between Sowell, Massie and Nate Potter for that job.

Steve Keim has talked about this publicly. They want to get "longer" at the position to defend opposing tight ends better. 2013 starting strong safety Yeremiah Bell is a free agent. Starting free safety Tyrann Mathieu is recovering from major knee surgery. They have Rashad Johnson, who is an able starter and then a bunch of unproven players.

I have kicker ahead of the positions that follow simply because of the fact that the position typically has only one spot on the roster. Jay Feely is going to be a free agent and it is uncertain whether he returns. The only kicker on the roster right now is Danny Hrapmann. If Feely is not brought back, then they need a reliable kicker. Kickers win and lose games alone sometimes.

Tight end:

Of the tight ends on the active roster last season, only Rob Housler is under contract for 2014. There wasn't a lot of production from the position,

The Cards have their twos starters in Patrick Peterson and Jerraud Powers, but Javier Arenas and Antoine Cason are free agents and Tyrann Mathieu is recovering from major knee surgery. Will Justin Bethel take the next big step? Will there be a new crop of corners?
