Mel Kiper mock draft says Arizona Cardinals pick QB Derek Carr at No. 20

The ESPN draft expert says the Cards grab their QB of the future.

Cary Edmondson-US PRESSWIRE

ESPN's Mel Kiper released his fourth mock draft and this time he has the Arizona Cardinals taking a quarterback in the first round.

Looking ahead to 2015, the Cardinals take quarterback Derek Carr with the 20th overall pick.

My friend Todd McShay will cringe when he sees this -- he's been consistent in saying Carr is not worthy of being drafted remotely this high -- but this is a mock, not a player ranking. The Cardinals have a pretty good roster in place, will be getting an extra first-round pick when you consider that last year's first-rounder, Jonathan Cooper, will return from injury in 2014, and they don't have a worthy No. 2 behind Carson Palmer, who will turn 35 during the 2014 season. Carr is my fourth-ranked QB, and I can certainly see some other options here, including wide receiver, or right tackle.

After the fist, Kiper goes on to have Arizona picking up a player that will make more of an immediate -- pass rusher Georgia Tech linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu.

They get a QB to put behind Palmer in Round 1, and add some needed help and depth at outside linebacker in Round 2. Attaochu can really close when he gets the edge as a pass-rusher.

Looking at the selection of Carr -- look at who is available. Ryan Shazier is on the board. So is Anthony Barr. Cornerback Kyle Fuller is there.

If the front office is sold on Carr, then I have a hard time criticizing the pick. They need to think about the future, but they also have other areas of need.

What do you think of the Kiper mock? Should the Cards pull the trigger on a QB early? Will Carr be the answer? Do you even like Carr to begin with? Discuss it in the comment section.
