With training camp beginning at the end of next week, it is time to begin our positional previews. Today we start with the quarterback position, which is pretty set.
Let's go through the roster locks, longshots and questions at the position that might come up in training camp.
Roster locks:
Carson Palmer is clearly a lock. He's the starter and by far the best quarterback on the roster.
If you believe Bruce Arians (can we really do that anymore?), Drew Stanton is a lock as the number two. Arians trusts him, he knows the offense and is good in the quarterback room.
Fourth round draft pick Logan Thomas has to be considered a lock. He was drafted to be developed (hopefully) into a franchise quarterback. That won't happen if he gets cut his first training camp. He will get ample opportunities in the preseason to get some work. He will have to be absolutely terrible and suddenly give a poor effort in practice or in the classroom. That isn't likely to happen.
He'll be on the roster.
Roster longshot:
This would be Ryan Lindley. Lindley has gotten nothing but praise from Bruce Arians, but there is just almost no way he can make the team, other than an injury. He is ineligible for the practice squad. The team isn't cutting Logan Thomas and Drew Stanton appears to be a lock for number two. It would be absurd to keep four QBs on the roster.
Questions:
Heading into the season, the biggest question is how much better Carson Palmer will be and how much he has in the tank. Can he cut down on turnovers and lead the team to the playoffs?
Will he return after this season?
How good will Logan Thomas show he might be in his preseason work?
Can Ryan Lindley show enough in the preseason to supplant Drew Stanton, as unlikely as that seems?
Will Palmer stay healthy and will the offense improve as he enters Year 2 of the Arians offense?
