The Arizona Cardinals have a very short list of players who have worn jersey No. 9. Since there are nine days left until the Cardinals take the field to open their season.
Who has worn it?
It is now worn by punter Dave Zastudil, who has had No. 9 since 2011. He is the stud of this short list. In 2012, he set an NFL record for punts downed inside the 20 and was awful close to setting the record for number of punts in a season. Zastudil was a late training camp addition when Ken Whisenhunt wasn't pleased with Ben Graham anymore.
Also in 2011, but only in training camp, it belonged to another punter -- Derek Epperson.
Before that, you have to go all the way back to punter Dirk Johnson in 2008.
Before him? You have to go all the way back to 1994 when QB Jim McMahon wore it. McMahon was brought in by Buddy Ryan -- one of his strange decisions. By then, he was 35 years old. He even started a game.
Before McMahon, you have to go back to the 50s.
1953 -- Jim Root
1952 -- Don Panciera
1950 -- Gerry Cowhig
Thank goodness for Zasty. This would be an awful group without him.
