In the absence of outside linebacker John Abraham, fourth year veteran Sam Acho is getting a lot of with the first team defense. He missed all but the first three games of the season when he was placed on injured reserve and it looks like he is back at full speed.
Head coach Bruce Arians took note of it in his Tuesday media session.
"He's playing really fast and is around the quarterback more than anybody right now," Arians said about him. "Sam plays with a very high motor all the time, and if you're going against him, you can't relax."
Pressure on the quarterback...that is something the Cardinals must have and need to find a consistent pass rush outside of Abraham, who had 11.5 sacks last season.
The next step for Acho is game action and he will have that this Saturday against the Houston Texans.
"I'd like to see him against a guy like Duane Brown (Houston's starting left tackle), for how long Duane plays," said Arians. "But those are good measuring sticks when you go against guys that are All-Pro tackles to know if you're really back."
A healthy and productive Acho will be an asset. It is an important year for him because it is the final year of his contract and the team will need to make a decision on him after the season. They don't have a lot of proven pass rushing off the edge after this year. Abraham is 36 and in the final year of his deal, Matt Shaughnessy is not a very good pass rusher and 2013 fourth round pick Alex Okafor is unproven still...and also missed almost all last season to injury.
What do you think Acho will offer this weekend and during the season overall?
