Arizona Cardinals select captains, Larry Fitzgerald not one of them

The team selects its leadership.

The Arizona Cardinals players placed their votes and have selected their captains for this season. They have four captains this year -- one on offense, one on defense and two on special teams. That is one less than 2013, when they had two on offense.

There were some changes, and there had to be. Last year's defensive captain, Darnell Dockett, is on injured reserve and kicker Jay Feely, who was a special teams captain last year, is no longer with the team after losing the kicking competition to Chandler Catanzaro.

This year, Carson Palmer is the offensive captain. Larry Fitzgerald is not.

Calais Campbell is the defensive captain. However, newcomer Larry Foote was close. On Sirius XM NFL Radio, Arians said the veteran received 12 votes and already has a ton of respect in the locker room.

on special teams, once again Lorenzo Alexander is a captain. This year he is accompanied by veteran punter Dave Zastudil.

There is only one surprise out of all of this -- Fitz is not a captain. Either this means the team has simply thrown all its eggs into the Carson Palmer basket or maybe his declining performance on the field the past couple of years, combined with the amount of side work in practice he has done working on his hamstrings and now his knee has changed the way players look at him.

The truth is there are a number of reasons why Fitz wouldn't be a captain this year, but it certainly is telling that he is not. Do you read anything into it as we get closer to the start of the season?
