Cardinals vs Chargers inactives: Andre Ellington to play, Tyrann Mathieu inactive

The running back is a go for the season opener.

The Arizona Cardinals announced their seven inactives for their Monday Night Football game against the San Diego Chargers.

In a surprise after original reports at the end of last week, running back Andre Ellington is active and will start at running back.

The other name that fans have been wondering about is safety Tyrann Mathieu. Despite hopes he might play in the season opener, he is among the inactives. He will not play.

In what is a smaller surprise, punter Dave Zastudil is active, along with newly signed Drew Butler. My initial thoughts would be that Zasty will still hold for kicks, but Butler will handle punting duties.

The seven inactives for the Cardinals are:

  • QB Logan Thomas
  • DE Kareem Martin'
  • G Earl Watford
  • LB Glenn Carson
  • LB Alex Okafor
  • S Tyrann Mathieu
  • TE Darren Fells

For the Chargers, tight end Antonio Gates is active. This is important because Arizona struggled with tight ends all last season. San Diego's inactives are:

  • WR Dontrelle Inman
  • CB Chris Davis
  • S Jahleel Addae
  • RB Brandon OIiver
  • OLB Tourek Williams
  • DT Ricardo Mathews
  • DT Ryan Carrethers
