We continue to wait for the Arizona Cardinals to make an announcement regarding their coaching staff. They have three vacancies to fill after defensive coordinator Todd Bowles left to become head coach of the New York Jets. He took with him linebacker coach Mike Caldwell and defensive backs assistant Ryan Slowik.
Head coach Bruce Arians was a guest on Fox Sports Radio 910 with Mike Jurecki and Jody Oehler and he was asked about the coming coaching changes.
Arians explained why he wants to promote a defensive coordinator from within the staff he has.
"I did not want my players to walk in and not know what they're doing the first day," he explained. "Then no new language, it's the same defense and the same philosophy."
The announcement will come next week after the Super Bowl.
Arians said they plan on adding "a veteran or two and another young coach" to the staff, "hopefully a former player we can give an opportunity to."
The name most keep bouncing around for the DC promotion is James Bettcher, the team's outside linebackers coach. He did not play in NFL,
We know the Cardinals had interest in veteran coaches Dick LeBeau and Mike Nolan, but they will not join the staff. More recently, former Falcons head coach Mike Smith's name came up, but it appears that led to nothing as well.
Now before you think that former Cardinals star Adrian Wilson will be joining the staff (especially since there is an opening for a defensive backs assistant), remember Wilson is still working to play in the NFL. He has not given up on that yet.
After weeks of speculation, it appears we will know if a few days how everything will shake out.
