Matchups that matter in Cardinals vs. Lions

New, comments

What are the matchups that matter in the Week 5 battle?

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Yes, we have another game preview, looking at the Arizona Cardinals and Detroit Lions. This time, we look at matchups. Which ones matter most in the Week 5 battle?

Calvin Johnson vs. Patrick Peterson

This is the biggest, most publicized matchup. Cardinals safety Deone Bucannon called it "a dream come true" to be able to be a part of that battle. It is elite receiver against top corner. Peterson has been a shutdown corner this season, allowing only 85 yards total so  far. His primary assignment has not had a catch in each of the last two weeks. Johnson is off to a slow start with only 27 catches, averaging less than 10 yards per reception and he has only scored once.

Cardinals offensive line vs. decimated Detroit defensive line

The Lions will be without two starters on the interior line. Ideally that means the Cardinals can get a push in the running game and can keep the inside of the pocket clean for  Carson Palmer.

Ziggy Ansah vs. Jared Veldheer

Ansah has four sacks and a forced fumble through four games. He will line up primarily against the Cardinal left tackle. He has allowed five pressures total in four games. He has also been penalized twice for holding this season. Can Veldheer keep Ansah away from Palmer?

Cardinals run defense vs. Lions rushing offense

Arizona was torn apart late last week by Todd Gurley, who rushed for 146 yards, 144 in the second half and 123 on four carries. They need to bounce back and face a Lions offense which is dead last in the NFL in rushing yards per game (47) and yards per carry (2.7). However, they do have a rookie in Ameer Abdullah who could give the Cardinals trouble. Will the rush defense look more like the first three games or like the last half of last week?

Calais Campbell vs. Laken Tomlinson

Campbell has a monster game against the Rams with 11 tackles and half a sack. He faces a rookie who has not yet been productive. He has not yet allowed a sack, but has given up eight total pressures. He has graded negatively in the passing game and running game by Pro Football Focus.
