Numbers still give Arizona Cardinals best chance at Super Bowl

New, comments

Even with one loss, their performance still is tops.

The Arizona Cardinals have a loss. They made mistakes and fell to the St. Louis Rams 24-22 on Sunday at home. While most power rankings have had the Cards dropping, at least a little bit, one site dedicated to numbers still has the Cardinals at the top.

After their 3-0 start, numberFire data had them as the top team in the NFL, both number one in power rankings and gave them top odds at making the Super Bowl this season.

Despite the loss on Sunday, numberFire still has the Cardinals at the top.

The loss changed their projected regular season record from 12-4 to 11-5 and their overall playoff odds dropped from 96 percent to 87 percent, but with a more than 15 percent chance at making the Super Bowl, they still have the top odds.

In terms of the Super Bowl, the AFC has the next most likely teams to make it -- the Broncos at 12.8 percent and the Patriots at 11.3 percent. In the NFC, the Packers are second to the Cardinals, but at 9.6 percent.

The Cardinals hold a one-game lead in the division, but still are given more than a 71-percent shot at the division title. Seattle is second at 14.8 percent.

Why are the Cardinals still at the top? It has to do with overall offensive and defensive production. They are still producing 72 more points on the season than a typical team in similar circumstances and allowing 18 less points. That gives them an overall differential of more than 11 points a game, the highest in the league.

After a lot of disappointment and many jumping off the hype train the Cardinals created with three very impressive win, it appears their goals are still intact.
