The Arizona Cardinals improved to 12-2 on Sunday with a 40-17 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. We know the team set a franchise record for regular season wins and also clinched the NFC West title. But there were a number of other stats and notes to share from the win. These notes come from the team itself in a release to the media.
Here are some of the most interesting facts.
The Cardinals have more touchdowns than punts
Arizona is second in the NFL in touchdowns with 52. But they have only punted 51 times. No other team has more touchdowns than punts. The next closest team in terms of ratio is Carolina, who has a -12 TD/punt ratio.
Cardinals avoiding turnovers in record fashion
The Cardinals have not committed a turnover in four straight games. The team had never done that in franchise history. They had never ven gone more than two consecutive games.
Palmer not turning the ball over
Quarterback Carson Palmer, known throughout his career as a guy who will turn the ball over, had the longest active streak for throws without an interception. He has gone the last 173 throws without being picked off. It is the longest streak he has had in his career.
But there is also a mind-blowing fact if we look at the longest current streaks without an interception
1. Carson Palmer, 173 throws
2. Russell Wilson, 162
3. Ryan Tannehill, 146
4. Colin Kaepernick, 135
5. Derek Anderson, 111
Yes, Derek Anderson is on that list. He has not thrown an interception since 2010, when he was a member of the Arizona Cardinals. He has thrown five touchdowns in the five seasons since then, in his 111 passing attempts as backup for the Carolina Panthers.
David Johnson making some history
Rookie running back David Johnson gets a few notes in history.
He set a frachise rookie record for touchdowns in a season with 12.
He became the first player in team history to rush for 180 or more yards and score three touchdowns. Two players have rushed for 160+ and three scores, but those players were Ollie Matson in 1954 and Willis Crenshaw in 1968.
Only one other player in league history has rushed for 185+ yards and three touchdowns against the Eagles. The other player was Hall of Famer Jim Brown.
Johnson has rushed for more yards in December (378) than 24 NFL teams have.
His 229 yards from scrimmage are the fourth highest total in a game in franchise history.
Catanzaro kicking his way to records
Kicker Chandler Catanzaro has scored more points than any other player in team history except for one. he has 129 points, which is third in the NFL this season. With 12 more points, he will set the team record for points in a season. Neil Rackers currently holds the record with 140 in 2005.
Trends continue in win over Philly
By winning on Sunday and allowing only 17 points, the Cardinals are 9-0 when they give up 20 points or less in a game. They are 27-2 in that scenario since 2013 when Bruce Arians became head coach.
When Arizona outrushes an opponent, they have won 26 straight games since the start of the 2013 season. They are 26-1 overall.
Since the start of 2013, the Cardinals are now 20-1 when they win the turnover battle.
Arizona is now 27-1 since the start of 2013 when they lead after three quarters. All 12 of their wins have come with a lead after the third quarter.
