The 2015 NFL Draft is still a ways off, but with the NFL Scouting Combine coming up next week, we can start taking a look at potential prospects that could land in Arizona. Mike Mayock released his is draft prospect positional rankings, giving the top five players of every position.
Let's see who he has at some of the areas where the Arizona Cardinals could be focusing some attention this year.
At running back, Mayock lists Melvin Gordon, Todd Gurley, Ameer Abdullah, Duke Johnnson and Tevin Coleman. Arizona should have a shot at all these players, as Gordon is the one going earliest in the draft and in most mocks he is getting selected right around when the Cardinals pick at No. 24. However, the Cardinals have a terrible history of drafted backs early, so a player like Duke Johnson in the middle rounds could be a possibility.
Among the interior offensive linemen, Mayock includes Brandon Scherff, Cameron Erving, Laken Tomlinson, A.J. Cann and Tre' Jackson. The Cardinals could use a younger center and an upgrade at guard, assuming Jonathan Cooper pans out. The Cardinals could have a shot at all these players.
Among offensive tackles, there is T.J. Clemmings, Andrus Peat, La'el Collins, Ereck Flowers, Cedric Ogbuehi and D.J. Humphries. While not a big need, with Bobby Massie entering the final year of his rookie contract, Arizona might need a new right tackle. I have seen the top three guys all mocked to the Cardinals at some point. However, as tackle value increases, the first three guys on the list might not even be on the board by the 24th pick.
At edge rusher, Arizona might not even have a shot at any of the top five guys. Mayock's list includes Dante Fowler Jr., Randy Gregory, Shane Ray, Vic Beasley and Bud Dupree. Arizona needs an upgrade from the edge, someone who can disrupt and get to the QB. They might not have a chance with any of these guys by the time the 24th pick comes up.
At linebacker, Mayock includes Paul Dawson, Benardrick McKinney, Denzel Perryman, Eric Kendricks and Stephone Anthony. Arizona has been projected to select McKinney, Perryman and Kendricks in different mocks. Considering the uncertain future of Daryl Washington, the Cardinals might be taking one of these guys in the first round.
At cornerback, a secondary need in my opinion, but always a position you can add players, there are Trae Waynes, Marcus Peters, Jalen Collins, P.J. Williams and Kevin Johnson. Mel Kiper mocked Collins to the Cardinals at No. 24 recently.
Are there any other positions of need and are there players Mayock included worth targeting?
