The Arizona Cardinals continue to add players to the mix at inside linebacker. After a visit a few days ago, the Cardinals have announced the signing of linebacker Darryl Sharpton to a one-year contract.
Sharpton (5-11, 235) is a five-year NFL veteran who played last season with the Chicago Bears after spending his first four seasons with the Houston Texans. He entered the league with the Texans as a fourth-round pick (102nd overall) in the 2010 NFL Draft out of Miami. In his four seasons with Houston (2010-13), he played in 42 games with 19 starts before joining the Bears last season where he played in five games (two starts), collecting 27 tackles, two passes defensed and three QB pressures.
His best season was in 2013 with the Texans when he played in 15 games (eight starts) and set a career high with 87 tackles. For his career, the 27-year old Sharpton has appeared in 47 games (21 starts) and has recorded 171 tackles (105 solos), five passes defensed, one sack, one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
To make room for Sharpton, the team released safety Eddie Whitley.
What role will he play? There is no promise of anything. Sharpton ha a history of injuries. Last offseason the team added Ernie Sims. He didn't make it out of training camp. The team still does not know the future of Daryl Washington and Kevin Minter has not shown yet he can be "the guy."
