61 days left until the Arizona Cardinals play their first regular season game. You know what that means! Today we focus on uniform No. 61.
It is worn today by guard Jonathan Cooper, the team's first round pick in 2013 -- the seventh pick overall. This is the year it looks like he will finally make an impact after being hampered by injury the last two seasons.
Before Cooper, there hasn't been much.
But let's learn of two.
Back on the first Cardinals offensive line I personally remember, there was Lance Smith. He wore 61. He was drafted in 1985 while the team was still in St. Louis. He played right tackle for his first two seasons and then moved to right guard in 1987. From that point through 1993, he started every single game for the Cardinals except for one he missed in 1987. After leaving the Cardinals, he was a starter three more seasons for the Giants.
Then, long before Smith was Bob Demarco. He played for St. Louis from 1961-1969, starting at center full time starting 1962. He was a three-time Pro Bowler (1963, 1965, 1967) and a two-time 1st Team All-Pro (1967, 1969). By the way, how do you not make the Pro Bowl if you are 1st Team All-Pro?
Who is your favorite No. 61? Are there others you remember? The full list since 1950 is here.
