2015 NFL countdown: 73 days left and Cardinals jersey No. 73

Who has worn it well?

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Today, with 73 days remaining until the Arizona Cardinals play the New Orleans Saints in their 2015 season opener, we look at jersey no. 73.

Who wears it now?

That would be defensive lineman Josh Mauro, whom the Cardinals acquired on a waiver claim last season. He saw a little bit of playing time late last season and is an intriguing player, to say the least. Chances are he will get caught in the numbers game on the defensive line and will not make the roster this year.

Other notable 73s are Eric Winston, the team's starting right tackle in 2013. Matt Joyce wore it for five seasons in the 90s, starting at left guard and other positions on the line for two seasons. Mark May, one of the original Washington Redskins "Hogs" offensive line, wore it for two seasons to end his career in Arizona.

Who is our focus today? Let's go back in time again to the St. Louis days. For 14 years, No. 73 belonged to Ernie McMillan, show started at right tackle for the Cardinals from 1961-1974. Back in the days when the Cards had good offensive linemen, McMillan was a four-time Pro Bowler, a one-time 1st team All-Pro and five-time second teamer.

He was good.

He comes way before my time, so I can't say more than that.
