2015 NFL countdown: 50 days and uniform No. 50

This has been another really uneventful jersey.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Today's countdown day is 50.

50 days until the start of the regular season for the Arizona Cardinals and 50 is the jersey number we focus on right now.

Guess what?

No one on the roster wears no. 50, but there is a reason for that. Larry Foote, who wore it last season, has yet to decide whether he plays or coaches this season. He is currently a member of the coaching staff. If he chooses to play, he would take No. 50 again. He wore 50 last season.

Other recent players to wear 50 are Dontay Moch, O'Brien Schofield and Al Johnson.

There have not been many impact players. The great Freddie Joe Nunn wore 50 a couple of different times -- in 1986 and again from 1991-1993. But he is more known for wearing 78, when he had his best seasons. He did, though, have 24.5 career sacks wearing 50.

Only three players have worn 50 more than three seasons for the Cardinals and only two wore it for more than three straight. Nunn was one of them.

Another was Wayne Mulligan, an offensive lineman for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1969-1973. He started at center and briefly at right tackle.

Jack Simmons was the other to wear it for more than three straight seasons. He wore it from 1952-1956 as the starting center for the Chicago Cardinals. he made the Pro Bowl his final season.
