2015 NFL countdown: 44 days remaining and who wore Cardinals jersey 44

Just another number to recall.

Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

There are now 44 days until the Arizona Cardinals open their season in Week 1. Today we look at jersey No. 44 and learn about a couple of players who have worn it.

It is now the number second round draft pick Markus Golden wears, but who knows if that will be his actual number by the end of training camp.

Before Golden, there hasn't been much in the last 30 years in terms of impact.

If you remember the St. Louis days, perhaps you recall Wayne Smith, a cornerback. He wore 44 from 1983-86 and, in that time, started 54 of 65 games and intercepted seven passes.

Receiver John Gilliam wore it for the Cardinals back in 1969-1971. He had two 900-yard seasons and an 800-yard season. He then left to the Vikings and made the Pro Bowl the next four seasons. He was known as Patcheye.

From 1958-1964, John David Crow was 44. He was a running back, fullback and tight end. As a Chicago and St. Louis Cardinal, he made the Pro Bowl three times. In seven seasons, he amassed over 5400 yards from scrimmage.
