With training camp opening and the Arizona Cardinals holding their first practice, they will not be wearing pads. Those are the rules in the NFL. However, there will be energy in the stadium as thousands of fans show up on he weekend for training camp.
With that combination, it can lead to injuries because player get a little too amped up.
Head coach Bruce Arians told reporters Saturday morning he is "anxious to get through this one healthy," referring to Saturday's practice and also Sunday's, the two where the Cardinals will still be in shorts.
"Because of the excitement that's going on, the fans are going to be here and we'll still be in shorts," he said.
Players tend to get excited and might do a little too much, leading to injuries.
Injuries have been a concern in training camp the last few seasons. While they have not occurred in the two days of shorts, every year starting in 2011 the team has lost a projected starter for the season in camp or the preseason.
Here is that list:
2011: CB Greg Toler (torn ACL), RB Ryan Williams (torn patella tendon in knee)
2012: LT Levi Brown (torn triceps)
2013: G Jonathan Cooper (broken leg)
2014: DT Darnell Dockett (torn ACL)
Let's hope 2015 does not have another name on the list to continue the streak.
