2015 NFL countdown: 22 days until kickoff and Cardinals jersey No. 22

Just over 3 weeks away.

I missed No. 23, but there are now 22 days left until the Arizona Cardinals play the New Orleans Saints at University of Phoenix Stadium for the each team's 2015 regular season opener.

Who has worn No. 22?

It is the number that now belongs to safety Tony Jefferson, who is part of the four-safety rotation the Cardinals use. He made the team as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma in 2013 and was a starter last season.

What about before?

In recent years, William Gay, Richard Marshall, Matt Ware and Damien Anderson wore it.

A bust of a draft pick, cornerback Tom Knight, wore it from 1997-2000.

Adrian Wilson wore it his rookie year.

The player to remember, though, is Roger Wehrli. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007.

He played cornerback for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1969-1982. He had 40 career interceptions, including twice picking off six passes in a season. He made the Pro Bowl seven times and was a First Team All-Pro three straight years from 1975-1977.

He also had a rushing touchdown and kicked an extra point in his career. He once passed the ball, but did not complete it.

He was a great one, even though most of us never saw him.

Do you have any other 22 memories? The full list since 1950 is here.
