2015 NFL countdown: 38 days remaining and Cardinals jersey No. 38

It's Ellington's number.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Today's number is 38.

There are 38 days until the Arizona Cardinals play in Week 1. That means we look at jersey No. 38.

It is a significant number right now because it is worn by starting running back Andre Ellington. Drafted in the sixth round in 2013, he was one of the surprises of the draft as he made big play after big play his rookie season and led all of football in yards per carry.

His Year 2 was disappointing, as he averaged just 3.3 yards per carry, but he had a foot injury all season and he landed on injured reserve, needing hernia surgery.

Before Ellington, only two unknown players who never made it out of the preseason wore it after the turn of the century.

If we go back a little further, you get safety Michael Zordich, who played five seasons for the Cardinals. He started for two seasons and then was benched by Buddy Ryan and chased out of town. He would go on to play and start for five more seasons as an Eagle, where he was pretty good.

Lee Nelson, a defensive back who began his career at corner and then moved to safety, wore the number the longest -- 1976-1985. He was a starter for much of his career and had as many as four interceptions in his career.

But, like the 40s and 39, 38 has not been a very popular number. Do you remember any other 38s, or do you have memories of any of the players already mentioned?
